British Gas Direct Debit System

I am a new BG customer and they explained their direct debit choice to me as 1) variable - you pay every month the amount you owe(energy used in that month) 2) Fixed - you pay the same amount every 3 or 6 months.  When i explained that i wanted a monthly direct debit which took a fixed amount every month  - advisor said she had never heard of them.  I know BG advisors are in south africa, but am i really imagining the last 40 years of bills where i paid my energy every month, fixed?

It is probably a terminology issue.   They are probably thinking of a fixed amount as a value that does not change.   However, in reality, you want to pay an amount that averages your expected annual usage but is subject to change.   i.e. the amount will remain the same each month unless something changes it  (so not actually fixed).
