Samsung TV + Humax = frustration

We have a Samsung TV, linked to a Humax recorder via satelitte dish.

To turn TV on, we press Red button on Samsung TV remote control, then set that aside. Thereafter the Humax control for everything else touching only the buttons were familiar with.

Back to Samsung remote red button to close down.

Of late, after pressing Samsung remote red button to start, the channel is locked where we've left it. We're unable to change channel or increase/decrease volume.

This happens daily and we've had to experiment achieving success eventually.

We've now noted that after switching on on finding the locked scenario, if we press the STB (top left) on Humax remote, it clears itself.

Have we done something wrong or have Humax introduced an update?. Eitherway, we're fed up with this situation, can anyone advise please?.

This is always going to be a difficult thing for someone else to understand and explain, because the model/capabilities of TV and the way you have connected the devices together will both affect how the user interface works.

But the part of your post that I quoted above suggests that you don't understand how your equipment works - because you can't connect a TV to a Humax box via a satellite dish.

In reality, the satellite dish is an input to the Humax box. And it may also be an input to the Samsung TV (for example if you have a satellite dish with more than one receiver within the dish and the TV has its own built-in satellite tuner).

From your description, your normal method of viewing is to use the three components in a chain: The satellite dish as an input to the tuner that is built into the Humax, and the Humax as an input (probably via an HDMI connection) to the TV.

What your post doesn't explain is whether the Samsung TV has any aerial/satellite inputs of its own. If it does, then one reason for the change in behaviour could be that you are turning on the TV when the Humax box is already switched on. If that were the case then the TV would not see a change in status of the HDMI connection, and so would not automatically switch itself to display the output from the Humax - in which case what you may actually be seeing is the output from the tuner that is built into the TV (rather than the tuner that is built into the Humax).

If that guess is correct then you will find that the channel is not locked - it is simply that you have to use the TV's remote control to change channel, rather than the Humax remote (because you are viewing the tuner in the TV).

  • Pressing the STB button on the Humax remote changes the mode so the remote controls the Humax box (STB).

If the TV button is pressed, then the Humax Remote sends TV commands instead.

So if you need to press the STB button, it means either somebody has previously pressed the TV button and changed modes or maybe the batteries are low and it is resetting modes itself.

Do either the STB or TV buttons illuminate when you press say volume or channel change? If so, it indicates what mode it is in.
  • Oh my goodness, this is, or rather this was too complicated but it seems the problem MAY have been resolved.

Two batteries in remote, sort of suspended rather than lying down, only the removable case holding them in, so when we placed the control down at night on unit, the batteries dropped slightly, enough to stop the "beam" functioning properly.

Yes, silly but ruddy frustrating. I've now put a piece of card between batteries and removable case to hold them tight. So far so good.
