I wasn't suggesting an aggressive approach, but amateurs like this LL need to be made aware that they cannot dictate whom the tenants choose to use as their utility suppliers.

theres also that once the meter is switched its not like it can be swapped back. so only the tenant will know how likely it is the landlord or agent would notice during an inspection or how likely it is they would go to the bother and cost of evicting an otherwise decent tenant for something that can't be changed.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

Please consider buying some pet food and giving it to your local food bank collection or animal charity. Animals aren't to blame for the cost of living crisis.

Simply tell the landlord it was broken and had to be replaced. Nothing the LL can do about it and no reason for them to cause the tenant problems.

That presumes that the sort of person who thinks SMS are “hazardous” is likely to be a level-headed, rational type…I rather think we’ve seen on here fairly recently that this is sometimes very far from the truth!

Just wait until they contact saying the meter has come to its end of life then the landlord won't have any option but to have the meters changed.
15 years ago I moved into a flat and there was two energy suppliers and I changed the electric over to BG. If you are the one paying the bills then you should have the right to change suppliers. It should be the same with a meter change if the tenant wants smart meters then they should be able to install them without any notification to the landlord. The only problem would be if the old meters are prepayment and they change them for credit meters maybe the landlord wanted prepayment meters in the property so that the tenants couldn't move out and owe hundreds or thousands of pounds in electric and gas bills!
Someone please tell me what money is

Even in that case it's not a problem for the LL as the debt is not his/hers. Unless of course they are very lax and not taking readings and getting the account switched when the tenant leavez

  • Thank you all for your responses. They are a great help.
  • Hi,
The meter is not in the property it is in the grounds and SSE are insisting they have the right to change it . The tenancy agreement only states she cannot change supplier.
apart from the legalities, will it be able to communicate?

Just go ahead and get the meters changed. No need to tell the landlord.

Very suspicious that a landlord does not want a smart meter. The old meter s are so easy to bypass whereas smart meters are not .

I used to find many landlords fiddling meters if they were letting with all inclusive bills included in the monthly rental rates.
Landlord may have future plans for the property for multi room accommodation which includes energy all inclusive   billing .

You would think from a safety reason that landlords would love smart meters as the tenants struggle to fiddle smart meters and their property is safer from an electrical cable fire or gas meter explosion .
I m not buying this nonesense about smart meters are hazardous..That woman who started Stop Smart Meters came up with that idea because in her head she reckoned it made her anxious and panicky due to electromagnetic waves .
.Her iPhone clamped to her ear was doing the same thing though plus her WiFi router ..Enough people believed her .
