If it is a pension it will have been allocated a tex code. Your stepfather should have been informed about this at least every year and it should also be documented in his HMRC tax account.

Also normally a yearly communication of some sort from the pension provider.
Maybe if the OP is patient something will come through the letterbox, assuming they have the right address....
  • Thanks for all you comments. Unfortunately my step father used to live in Portugal and I believe any yearly documentation is going there which is one reason I'm trying to identify the company that is making the payments.

Did he work / earn any Portugese pension? Could that be a source?

Surely the bank must know or be able to find out what account these payments originated from. If that's so then I am surprised that the recipient or his attorney doesn't have the right to that information as well. To give an analogy, if payments we're being made into my bank account wouldn't I have the right to know where they came from?

As @Linton has said, if you look on HMRC current (or prior) year tax  details, any pension providers will be listed there where you would see the employer were he working. If he does not yet have online access it is well worth getting it set up for him.

    Is the property currently occupied?

If so, is it possible to contact the occupier?

I think that would show as different amounts every month due to currency fluctuations. My guess would be some kind if annuity.
