Problems contacting HMRC with regards to Tax Returns

Options
I submitted my tax return in April 2022 and I still haven't had a response. You wait at least 45 minutes to talk to an agent and on the last occasion I was disconnected after being on the telephone for 75 minutes. Does anyone have any tips for how to escalate?

I feel your pain - I spoke to HMRC about 6 months ago and followed it up with a letter about 2 months ago because I know that I owe them money that I can't pay unless it's declared - however they have not yet responded so the money still sits in a savings account waiting....

Can you find the answer to your query using your on-line account?

How did you submit the tax return? When you say response, when you submit online you get an immediate submission reference and it shows on your account 3-5 days later.

If it was a paper return which you are still waiting to be processed then you would be best off trying ringing at just before 8am.

If it was filed online then could you expand on why you need to contact HMRC?

Look in your personal tax account ( online).
That should show if the return has been received.

Alternatively, call as soon as lines open to be at the head of the queue. Try shortly before 8am as some workers can start work early.
