Home insurance emergency cover - what to expect?

What the policy covers and the quality of support when help is needed will vary greatly. I needed to call the insurer during a storm a couple of years ago. A slate from a neighbours roof had smashed through the roof of our conservatory. I called the normal number and just got the message about normal working hours. Called the emergency number and was told it was only for electrical and plumbing problems! Fortunately a family member is a builder and they managed to secure the roof and prevent any further damage.

When I lost my roof in Storm Arwen, I rang my insurer's 'emergency' number. I held on for an hour and when I got through discovered it was only for heating and plumbing. Lesson to me to read the small print!£216 saved 24 October 20140

Sorry to resuscitate this but ouch!
Insurance company sent people round yesterday who have installed "mitigation equipment" in our room that had the EOW. Mitigation equipment seems to be code for "electric heater" - although I think it's a more complicated equipment than that it is certainly making the room a lot warmer.
The equipment seems to be using about £12-15 per day of electricity!
They told me that they know how much power it uses and we will get a refund for it as part of the claim.
Still - IHD looks frightening at the moment.0
