Drayton RTS1 - dial fell off.

Trying to figure out what holds the dial on to the unit! Reported as being wobbly, and when I checked on it, the dial was very loose and pulled off as easily as falling off.
Nothing appears to be broken, no signs of any 'bits' on the floor, no grooves in the dials inner collar - what holds it in place?! Something missing?

Thanks.

    Thanks both.
Yes, it'll 'stay' on - at least stay in place - as long as you don't breathe on it - it is literally just sitting there. You don't have to pull it off, it just falls off if you touch it.
I've tried pressing it back in place firmly, but there is no resistance, and no click. I wonder if there's a collar or other part that has gone missing? Looking at the dial part, the collar is completely smooth.
I'll take a tub of glue with me when I go back...

a little dab of silicone is what i'd recommend, that'll hold it but you'll still be able to remove if if you ever need to
  • 1. If you look at the first photograph you can see that the centre of the piece where the knob fits is rough, as if broken.
    2. At the 1:30 position of the same image, there is a flat.  I would guess this is where the spindle the knob fits to has a flat to enable it to turn.
    3. So, at a guess, the knob has broken off the part that attaches it to the spindle.
    4. If you can get the part which is still attached to the spindle out, you could try gluing it back to the round knob section.
    5. Plastics are generally hard to glue.  I would try:
5.1 If its a hard plastic like ABS, try plumber's solvent weld.  Try a bit on somewhere not noticeable, as it won't work on most plastics, but will on ABS.
5.2 Again, if its a hard plastic, try Araldite.  I prefer the original 24 hour setting one as I find it sets more solidly.
5.3 If its a soft plastic like polythene, it can't be glued, at least for a price under that of a replacement thermostat.
  • Thanks NFLO.
Interesting, I'd assumed that rough bit was a heat splurge -the plastic spindle was squished by a hot poker to hold the gubbins in place.
The 'flat' on the dial does fit the flat on the spindle (at 7 o'clock), so it all works when it's in place. I'll probably go for a dab of my default StixAll :-)
    Cheers.
