Car dash "battery now in standby mode"?

Hello all,

I didn't use my Dacia Sandero for a few days over the sub zero temperatures and first thing I noticed when getting in car was it says "battery now in stand by mode" and it still keeps popping up.
Then when I stop at lights etc it says "priority battery charge"?
What's going on anyone know?

Is it something worry about?

Cars only 11 month old brand new.

Stop start by any chance? Voltage drops due to the battery being very cold, the computer is protecting the battery and making sure that it does not flatten the battery on stop/start cycles.
  • Ahh it could be that then as not had such cold temperatures since I bought the car brand new in the spring.
And why does it only say that when stopped at the lights for example, it normally says prioritising thermal comfort when stopped at lights but now it says "priority battery charge"
    So nothing to worry about?

Go and take it on a decent run.  20-30 miles with not much stopping and starting to get the battery back up to full charge.
  • I am not totally sure as it depends on the model, but some stop/start cars will keep the engine running to power the heating or air conditioning, which I think is the thermal comfort. If the battery is low, or not providing full power then the car pushed more power into the battery and does not risk depleting the battery.

I do not think it is anything to worry about, but it is worth keeping an eye on it in different weather conditions, as next week is due to be considerably warmer it will probably go back to normal, it would likely do the same on a longer journey.

Thats exactly what I have done with my 6 year old jaguar with the 1 year old battery. A run up the motorway seems to fix the low battery issue.
  • My 5008 disables stop start below a certain temperature, and it won't operate in certain circumstances.  Some cars won't do stop start if the demister is being used.  It's to stop the battery going flat at the lights.  Recovery companies are notoriously long in waiting times at the moment.  I had to drive 30 miles to pick up my brother his disabled wife and her 8 month pregnant daughter because in spite of the aforementioned RAC said it would be 6 hours before they could get to them for a flat battery.

Do you have or can you borrow a battery charger?

If you don't have off street parking or access to a suitable power supply, do you have a friend or neighbour who could help out?

That would be better than taking the car for an unnecessary drive to charge the battery.

Read the car manual about battery charging. That should tell you where and how to connect the terminals etc.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

I get exactly the same messages on my car, probably due to it being a Renault.

There are various sensors like temp and battery sensors on the car and it will overide the stopstart if it thinks it needs to continue to run to produce the electrical power or heating/ventilation it needs.

It's not always a sign the battery is low, but can be due to the outside temp being low or the heating is on high to demist.

Usually my stopstart works on my way to work every morning and then won't again unitl I am close to home later in the day.
I presume the morning stopstarting has left the battery a bit low for most of my trip home.

In the recent cold snap it hasn't worked on the way to work, but does all the way home.

So now due to the cold as it's prioritised heating on the morning commute and as the car it parked in an underground car park all day, it's hasn't needed the sort of heating on the way home so the stopstart has then started to work.

  • Stop start is a PITA and I always switch it off.  One day I'll get round to changing the default to off.
  • My 5008 has stop start, worked about 20 times in 6 years.
I have a milage tracker, looks like it stops it working as uses a small amount of current.
    Don’t mind to be honest.
