The only problem I've had is the condensate pipe freezing earlier today.  Thankfully I realised quite quickly that the 'stat showed as heating but the radiators were very cool.  A kettle of hot water sorted it and the boiler isn't having any problem keeping the house warm, although it comes on more often due to the very cold weather.

I am prefacing this by saying we are very lucky as we fixed our energy before the crisis

I think something is amiss with our heating - it's been on continually since 4am when it was 15.8 degrees and now it's only 18.2 degrees. Does this mean our rad temp is too low on the boiler? Or perhaps rads full of sludge? The boiler is 16 years old but is a Vaillant Ecotec in a 3 bed terraced 2 storey house.

Many thanks for any light shed!
It's cold out. Try tweaking your flow temp up (I would start by adding 5C) - what is it currently set at?
  • Just tried to use my shower after heating the water for 30 mins like I always do... Luke warm 😭 it's definitely the cold playing havoc.
  • My heating would normally get the house from about 13c to 18c in less than 3 hours. These last two days it’s gotten down to 10c inside & struggled to get above 16c in the house. It gets up to 18c by evening time. I’ve given it a boost with an electric fan heater for 30 mins each in the two downstairs rooms today to get it comfortable quicker

Our kids have fled the nest, so we don’t heat their bedrooms. Nor the hall, stairs, etc. I put on a couple of sweaters before going down to make the coffee.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
  • Wow thanks all, I have upped the flow by 5 or so degrees, I can’t reach into the cupboard to see what the temp is set at but anyone familiar with vaillant dials it’s about 4o click. And house def feels warmer. Saying that the heating kicked in at 4 and was 16 degrees and it’s not only 17.1 3 hours later.

Wish we’d got our chimney swept as he can only come early jan and we’ve not had it done for two years so daren’t use it, even though we’ve loads to burn! I’d risk it if I hadn’t heard cooing!
