Ahh, this is interesting - I have now managed to make the pin move up and down, but the underside of the TRV head doesn't do a thing when I twist it from max to min. Looks like I'll be ordering a new one of those then, and hopefully problem solved!

You are all so helpful, thanks so much :)
    Cool.
When you say you 'have now managed to make the pin move up and down', is this because you weren't pressing it hard enough before, or because it was 'stuck', and you have now freed it? Does it move smoothly and freely - firm press down and 'thunk' as it bottoms-out, release and it springs back up instantly? It should be quite tough to push against the strong built-in spring, but actually move smoothly and without stiffness or stickiness. Does it?
I recall I had a few TRV heads fail when we first moved into this house, and they all failed in the 'closed' position - ie the head's insert was fully extended. This means that the valve will obviously remain off so the rad won't heat up, but it also makes the TRV head very awkward to refit as you are not only trying to position the head in place, but have to do so pushing against the valve's pin!
When you do get a new head, turn it to 'max' or '5' or whatever so it is fully open before you try and fit it, and this will make it easier to fit - it won't be pressing on the pin until you fit it and then turn it closed.
