We're on Economy 7 and I see that our rates, day rate and night rate, are going up by 6.8% and 13.1% respectively. Standing charge unchanged (gas rates unchanged). Those on singe rate will see a 0.8% increase and no change to standing charge. What does this mean for us? Right now, to at least match the single rate, we must average 26.3% of usage on right rate. This is going to jump to 39.0% come January. Our average over the last 12 months is 28.9%. Looks like we are being forced off of Economy 7? I would guess that many others on dual/multi-rate electricity will find exactly the same. Our supplier is Shell Energy
It possibly means that due to a change in pricing, it may be that Economy 7 isn't the right setup for you any more. However, it sounds as though you were borderline on it anyway - 26% is a very low amount of night use for it to still be more cost effective - how is your home heated?

E7 can work wonderfully - but generally only for those it is primarily designed for. We use in the region of 80%+ of our annual energy overnight - meaning that currently we've averaging a kWh price well under the single rate. Some people do make E7 work for them with gas heating and water, but those people are pretty rare - it requires huge amounts of load shifting.

As pointed out above - there are suppliers where the break-even is different - but I suspect you'll struggle to find anywhere else with a lower break-even than you are on currently!

Simple terms?  You misunderstood the EPG, and you misunderstood what is and isn't changing in January.
Thanks for that gem of wisdom, that's a really helpful detailed explanation :|
I'm not thick, I just haven't had time to delve beyond the policy headline. The email was a bit of a surprise, I expected a 'price guarantee' to, well, guarantee the unit price for the period of the EPG.
First to reply can sometimes be the sarciest person on the forum. However this is being posted a lot so a quick scroll down sometimes help.
... did you mean that ... sarkiest noting your by-line? 'scariest' or both could apply  :)

I am with E.ON Next Eastern (E7 Next Online v9) and have not noticed any movement to Next Flex yet; although I am on a fixed rate I will be coming off it at the end of January.

Very similar here in Wiltshire, +5.8% on day and +18% night rates which is a whopping increase. This is next flex rated

Hi fdtd ... I have just worked out that the increases in the Eastern region bring them up to the EPG single rate equivalent (based on 58% day, 42% night), from 32p to 34.54p per kWh ... so some of us have been lucky (ouch :s) from 1st Oct - 31st Dec.

You are both quite right. Another odd thing is despite our various suppliers over the years quoting that our night rate is available between 11.30pm to 6.30pm, I now know that this is absolutely not the case. Having checked it regularly over the last few months, our Radio Teleswitch flips over at 7pm GMT (8pm BST). The meter cupboard holds meters for multiple flats with their own RTSs and it is clear that most have their own unique time-cycle but ours flips to rate 2 the earliest by some margin. So previously, when we used to run the washing machine and/or dishwasher on a timer for early in the morning so that cycles finished at 6am, we were in fact not using E7 rate2! Knowing the correct times has enabled us to get our rate 2 usage up to just under 50% with minimal effort. I asked my current suppler about the E7 times and they seemed unconcerned. The shame is that the RTS service is due to become defunct at end of March 2023. Shell have told me that E7 times will then be standardised nationally at 12.30-7.30am.

It's set to be extended to April 2025 (see P.9).

Also remember when the clocks change so do your E7 times, was a few years before I realised this and like yourself was using the daytime rate in Winter between 6 30am and 7 30am not realising it had changed as the clocks had gone back.
