So you discredited artisan ones as too expensive but how did you calculate the cost of home made ones @murphybear?Murphybear said:I found in general terms that the artisan pies from bakeries were very good but expensiveThe clear winner was (drum roll)
Home made. Especially if the mincemeat was home made.
The best ones I've ever had were artisan but a close second best were home made... my aunt used to make her own mincemeat but if you add in a cost of labour they were would have been in a similar price bracket1 -
Morrison's bakery is hit and miss.sevenhills said:
My most recent experience of shortcrust pastry baked in store, seemed under cooked. I usually like them.TheBanker said:
Do you mean the ones from the instore bakery? I bought a pack yesterday and was surprised by how nice they were (and not a bad price at £1.25 for six). They had hundreds of packs, mostly dated 23 December (but some dated 25 December at the back) so expect some reductions!jacko220 said:Morrison's Puff Pastry Mince Pies for me but I have to travel across town to get them.No man is worth crawling on this earth.

Himself brought some puff pastry ones home from Co-op last night as they were reduced. The pastry was ok but pale, the mincemeat was sparse and bland.
I ordinarily prefer puffy ones but I'm not having much luck with that this year. Aldi and Lidl ones (not puffy) are both going down a treat though!

I didn’t mean to discredit the artisan ones but thought it would be useful for people to know they were more expensive.DullGreyGuy said:

I do a lot of baking for our sheltered housing afternoon tea twice a month. The mincemeat was my own homemade from last year, I livened it up with a touch of blood orange Cointreau. I buy this for cooking and a bottle lasts for a good number of years
This was about the taste rather than the cost.I’ve made a big batch this year and put them in the freezer. Having lost 29kg I don’t want to put it on again by stuffing my face with mince pies. I have 32 people who will do that for me
