How to use a smart meter

Thanks for your replies. I used the hob for heating some soup at lunchtime, for around 5 mins. Checked the reading on the monitor before and after. Then took another reading about an hour later so fine. I have then been out for a couple of hours and the monitor is telling me that in that last 2 hours the KWH has gone up 0.02. Now I know this is a miniscule amount but I find it puzzling.
As for why only have a gas cooker. The simple answer is I prefer to cook with gas, also if there were to be a power outage (and we have had a few) we still have the ability to cook food, make hot drinks and, if desperate a bit of warmth. It is an old house and to have central heating put in would be a nightmare as well as expensive.0 -
It's never been more cost-effective to install mains gas central heating, given the huge unit cost gulf between gas and electricity. per kWh. Before 2021, it might have taken 5 years or more to recoup the costs vs single-rate electricity. Now, you might recoup it in 2 or 3. And it does add value at sale time.
If you already have a gas supply into the property, it's a no-brainer.No free lunch, and no free laptop

I understand your thinking but we do not have heating or need heating in every room therefore what we have is perfectly OK for us. My father is elderly and would not be able to cope with the huge amount of work that would be imvolved. We've got off topic a little bit. I'm more concerned with understanding the smart meter at the moment.0
