in Credit cards
Hi all, hoping somebody can help. I'm buying a car & want to pay using part bank transfer & part credit card but the dealer doesn't accept cards. He's told me I can go to my bank and get them to pay to his bank using my card. Firstly, does anybody know if this is correct and secondly would this be considered a cash advance on the card thereby incurring fees? Sorry for the long post. TIA

No. If he doesn't accept cards, he doesn't accept them.
You could get cash off the card via a money transfer but with fees and no s75.2 -

I guess it might be possible, but even if it is then it would be treated as a cash withdrawal, with associated fees and interest - and, as noted by the previous poster, you'd get no S75 protection. Its unusual for dealers to not accept credit cards. Certainly, most will refuse to accept a credit card for the full purchase price, but most are happy with a small deposit. Remember, you only have to pay 1p on card for the whole purchase to be protected (subject to the usual limits on purchase price). Is it a reputable dealer? Have you asked if you could pay just a tiny amount by card?

Are you paying by credit card because you want S75 protection? Or because you need the credit facilities on the card to part fund the purchase? If the latter, there is the service Billhop which I have never used. If you have an invoice, they will take money from your credit card and pay a bank account. Downsides: 1) No S75 protection 2) There is a fee. I also don't know how they handle party payment of invoices.Edited to add: Probably no chargeback protection either. Just a guess as I have never used the service.1

Wouldn't buy from a dealer in the first place if they don't accept cards!
Sounds like scam or something dodgy to me but might be wrong. There was somebody else recently who got scammed with a car deal online and asked for advice here.0 -

Credit cards do not have the facility to pay bank accounts.
Time to find another dealer if they do not take cards. Sounds to me like card providers no longer want to provide them with a facility.
Either that or it is a really dodgy dealer that will disappear as soon as you have paid.Life in the slow lane0 -
Frankly what I think he's asking you to do is a money transfer. It's a normal transaction from a credit card - if your card offers you this. Sometimes there will be the option of a set time period to pay the amount at a fairly low rate - no fee and say 3 years at 4% or something. Other times it will be charged as a cash withdrawal so will get the highest interest amount for that card - potentially 30%.
But as others say - this won't get you any protection as available with a normal CC payment.
edited to add - but I wouldn't do it. potentially too expensive and no protection. I would have thought finance would have been offered first but maybe the place is too dodgy to be able to attract a finance company.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards.
