Electric Ireland - Price increase from 1/1/2023

With Electric Ireland increasing their prices by 23.9% from January 2023.  I am currently on a Keypad with Electric Ireland getting £35 credit when I switched from SSE Airtricity last August.

I was wondering if I can switch FROM Electric Ireland again - it says on their website the tariff I am on that a £40 exit free will be applied?  If they have put up their prices is this exit fee enforceable?

And finally - it looks like SSE Airtricity is the cheapest at the minute?  Keypad discount at 17.020p/kWh

thanks

That is bad news.  I think they usually write to you & should confirm you can leave without penalty.

  • Dear XXX,

I am writing to advise you that Electric Ireland’s residential prices will rise by 23.9% from 1st January 2023.

The Energy Price Guarantee (EPG) is still in place and is reducing your energy bill. The UK Government has announced in recent days that the EPG support rate will reduce on the 1st January 2023 from 19.9 pence/kWh to 13.6 pence/kWh, this change will automatically be applied to your bill.

Overall, these two changes means that there will be a £9.13 per week increase in the average annual customer bill, made up of £5.06 per week due to this price increase and £4.07 per week due to the EPG rate reduction.

We understand this price increase is unwelcome news for our customers. We would like to assure you we have sought to keep our prices as low as possible. However, this price increase is necessary due to the ongoing wholesale energy crisis.

We await government direction on the Energy Bill Support Scheme (EBSS), we will communicate with you once we have received more information.

If you are in a contract with Electric Ireland, you are free to switch to another supplier before the 1st January 2023 and you will not incur any charges. We would like to thank you for your continued custom.

    Yours sincerely,

    Kevin Caldwell

Was that email or physical letter? I just switched to them at end of November, would be nice to get the £100 switching bonus and move to someone cheaper
  • Thank you,

We didn't receive a letter - but i have searched through my emails - it has been received but in to the junk folder!

    We'll switch to SSE then!

“We understand this price increase is unwelcome.”

I just sigh when each company puts up their prices, as I just know the others will be following very shortly after.   I know Firmus have reduced their price but just think, no, bet it will go up in the New Year.

SSE Airtricity are also increasing their price in January, got an email the other day from them, something to do with a reduction in the government energy support scheme.

Did a top up on the same day I got the email and was issued the new longer code!!
  • Is this just pure profiteering from Electric Ireland? My rate is going from 17p to 33p so I will be switching. What I don’t understand is why Electric Ireland are putting their rates up at all (they blame wholesale price increases). But Power NI are cutting their rates, saying wholesale prices have reduced. The Energy Price Guarantee is also reducing with the government saying that energy prices are cheaper than expected in NI.

Just checked my junk folder and nothing there. On the flip side I am now aware of just how many Ukrainian women are interested in me, I'm sure my wife will be delighted...
