Sat Nav Comparison

Hello all,

I'm sorry if I have posted this on the wrong board but not sure where it should go. I would really like to get my husband a sat nav for Christmas (I know it's a little last minute). I have found the following sony systems which look pretty good but I am a bit of a technophobe. Could anyone advise which is the better of the two?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-NVU51G-...4557&s r=1-23

This first one I am oping to get on ebay for under £100

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...%3ESAT+NAV.htm
Or theres this one at argos.

The listing on ebay ends in the next few hours so any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

  • Go for the NV-U52 as although most of the specs are identical it has one HUGE advantage over the NV-U51, it can take memory cards so you can upgrade to larger maps when you need to, 512k internal memory is only just enough for the UK map, so if you want the Europe map the memory card is a must.

It's probably too late to say this as you've probably already clicked "Buy", but...

Before splashing out on a SatNav, it's worth taking a critical look at the product reviews (e.g. for the Sony products there seemed to be a recurring theme of slow response and poor reception), and maybe taking a look forums such as the one at:

    http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/

I was lucky enough to be able to borrow one (I won't say what make, but it was neither Sony nor TomTom) from a friend before buying - I hated it! The user interface was really difficult and reception in heavy cloud or overhanging trees was very bad.

I ended up buying a TomTom with a SIRF III based receiver, which is great in terms of sensitivity, and the mapping is pretty good (except for jn9 on the M25 - grrrrr!)

Pocketgpsworld is a great website but if you know the models of the ones you're considering (in your price range etc) you could look at http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/handhelds/compare.htm and select up to 4 to look at, at once and compare them. Cnet have reviewed LOADS.
