How to insure for my girlfriend driving my car?

I'd like my girlfriend to be able to drive my car occasionally. Typically we'd share driving on longer journeys.
She has her own car and insurance.
Do I put her on my insurance?
What information, if any,  will my insurance company  need to have about her?
Thanks

Easiest is generally to add her as a named driver. They'll want to know the same info that they asked about you... name, date of birth, claims history, driving convictions, length and type of license etc.

If its just a couple of times a year she could by temp insurance on your car but its most likely more expensive (though does protect your policy if she has an accident whilst driving in your car)

If she has her own insurance it MIGHT cover her to drive other cars without you needing to add her to your own policy. However be aware that

    (1) Not all policies come with this feature - she will have to read what her policy says carefully. If she can't find the part that says "the policyholder may also drive another car not owned by her..." then she doesn't have this cover
    (2) It will be third party cover only (unless whe has an unusual high net worth policy, so if she has an accident you or her will be paying for the transfer yourselves. Perhaps not a major issue if your car is a £1000 old banger, but more of an issue if it's a new Ferrari. If you're not happy with third party cover only you need to add her to your own policy instead.

On point 1 its worth noting that you often have to check both policybook and the certificate as many policies have it as an option but dont award it to all customers and secondly it only applies to the policyholder and not named drivers so if her car is insured in the name of a parent or such then she wouldnt be covered

Add her to your policy as a named driver, then there is no question about her right to drive it and no problem about level of insurance in the event of an accident.

    Hi OP
Put her on as a named driver if your ins co allows this.
You will need to pay a bit more for your insurance and depending on your insurance there may be an admin fee.

If you live in a low risk area and have a low-risk car ins wise, your GF will still have a may have larger excess but they will tell you.

NB: if you are doing this online and any questions you are not sure about, give the insurance co a call

    Thanks

Essentially as she is a learner, depending on the car you have and where you live, the mandatory excess that comes with some cars like the ones we have will be much higher and indeed you will need to pay a bit more for your insurance and depending on your insurance there may be an admin fee.

If you live in a low risk area and have a low-risk car ins wise, your GF will still have a larger excess due to risk.

You'll pay a higher premium and excess for a new driver than a learner.

She has her own car and insurance, where did the OP state she was a learner?
