We broke the chain a few years ago to sell our flat before our purchase was ready to proceed. It was taking ages, buyer was getting jumpy and we weren't confident of easily replacing them.
We had planned to stay with family for, we thought, 3-4 weeks to allow time to finish up last bits and pieces with the purchase. We were there four months, due to problems further up our vendor's chain.
In the end, our vendor agreed to break the chain themselves and go into rented.
So this can get messy quickly if you're not in a position to exchange on purchase. *That said*, although it was a pain at the time, I have no regrets, because it allowed us to do what we wanted in the end. But I would be very sure of your alternative accommodation and comfortable that you may be there some time if something goes wrong.1
