Marks and Spencer (M&S) bank has sent replacement credit card way before expiry date of current card

My previous Marks and Spencer (M&S) credit card expiry date was July 2026 (I say was because now that I've activated or started using the new card I assume the old one will not be valid).

Around mid-October this year (2022) I received a new card via courier and that one has an expiry date October 2027. The expiry date has moved further ahead about a year and a bit. Has anyone else had the same experience? Usually, I receive a replacement card a few weeks or at most months before the expiry. Never years! Unless, of course, a bank such as Tesco bank redesigns the card and decides to change it to plain blue.

One thing I noticed with the new M&S card is that it has a start date (month and year). The previous card (the one with expiry 07/26) did not have a start date.

My frequently used cards typically get replaced about a year before they expire. Your case seems extreme, I would ring the helpline to ask why, has someone requested a new card in the hope of intercepting it? Or is there an innocent explanation perhaps the role out of an updated card, or an error in their scheduling?

I would've thought the role out of an updated card would've been announced?

Just figured out what it may have been. On closer inspection of both cards I can see the 'old' card has just 'rewards' written on the front, whereas the new card has  'club rewards'.

I remember applying for the club rewards program in October. Then within the cooling off period I cancelled it.

The new card must've been sent out soon after I joined the club rewards program unbeknown that I cancelled before the end of cooling off period.

That would make sense - there is a different card design with a silver ampersand for the rewards members.
