Hairline horizontal cracks in plaster

I've noticed in the last few weeks that there are a few hairline cracks that run horizontally in both up and downstairs rooms. None of the cracks are bigger than 1-2mm but they seemed to have opened up a little more since the cold weather. I'm just curious as to how to monitor and what is the likely cause of horizontal vs vertical cracks?

This shows an example of one of the cracks. This is just under 1mm in width and runs in a horizontal line across the wall and around the chimney breast.

Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –
