When we owned our larger house (3500 sq ft with six beds over several floors/mezzanines) we had fifteen radiators including three in the hallway/landings. Due to the nature of the uppermost corridors (long/narrow) it wasn't possible to fit rads there. Ours were mostly old style - but new - cast iron rads which threw out masses of heat.

Although we sold that house in 2007 so might be misremembering, lol, I don't recall it ever being particularly cold...but we also had a new roof, thick insulation in the attic, interlined curtains, mainly fitted carpets and kept doors shut etc. However it was only double glazed at the back so we made extra efforts to keep the cold out at the front!

There was also a large porch which kept the chill off the main hallway. We did have two open fires too although only really used these at Christmas etc. We certainly used the central heating more there than we have in any subsequent house though and I know our bills were pretty massive.

Heavy, floor length curtains interlined with bump (wadding) can make a huge difference too imho - we had these virtually everywhere in that house (including on the enormous single glazed staircase window) - and in our current cold stone mill where we definitely feel the benefit!

We have solid floors with sanded floorboards - no carpets. We also don't have curtains on some windows including the half landing. The front door is sold wood with glass panels at the top and definitely lets in air as it doesn't fit tight into the frame. I would like to fit a porch to help. Would be relatively easy as there is already one outside wall, ceiling plus the wall with the door, so would only need 2 more walls, one having the porch door. Doubt it would need PP as the house protudes further on one side so we wouldn't be building forward of the building line.
