  • I am wondering whether the OP question is the right one? Rather than comparing apples and pears with the woodburner and the gas boiler, aren't you actually trying to minimise your gas consumption without using the boiler so little that it is damaged?

If that is the case, you need to understand your CH system - what is the most efficient way to run the boiler (from the manuals, not the default setting the plumber put it on when it was installed)? This probably also includes balancing of the radiators (not just with the trvs but balancing the flows across all the radiators and then using the trvs to limit the temperature at each radiator according to requirement) and adjusting the flow temperatures on the boiler. One thing that modern CH systems don't seem so keen on is zoning - which is what I think the OP is doing when they open doors / use fans to direct the heat to where it is required. That is particularly difficult with a standard CH system, and generally requires additional plumbing / control wiring or smart controls on each radiator. Neither of which are particularly low cost solutions.

I think that the least gas consuming method for a modern boiler, (having set up the boiler and system for optimum efficiency) would be to leave the boiler on, but have the thermostat set at a low temperature. * The OP seems to suggest that 16° has too much emphasis on the GCH, so perhaps reducing it until the right consumption point is reached. 12° seemed to also have too high a gas consumption, so perhaps drop it 1° at a time until you find what is right for you. But bear in mind, that it will take a few days for the building fabric to balance itself, so perhaps each test needs to be every day for a week before the thermostat temp is reduced again.

I would be interested if the OP's Test 2 yields different gas consumption data on subsequent days. Is the house temperature settling?

    * I have been trying to test this, but keep having issues with my smart meter, which makes my data unreliable and so I have yet to reach a conclusion. The issue with my house is that it is L shaped. I have been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to introduce zones and am happy with 1 of the 3. The other two are still work in progress.

  • So how much gas and electricity are people actually using? Obviously people at home will need more than if you are out all day, like OAPs, ill people, parents with little children.
Electricity is simple: a 2 kWh heater costs about £1 an hour inc. standing charges and vat. Subsidised = .70p but that would just heat 1 room. Adds up!
Much harder to work out gas central heating by the hour. I used 6 old meter units (133kwh per unit) in July and August but can use 10x that in this type of cold weather but now can't as I'd go bankrupt.

Now I am using practically nothing extra, brought an electric blanket, and whilst its obviously costing "something" it isnt enough to be obvious on my smart meter daily graph.

I run it about half power.

If one can accept a mind shift from heating the home to just the individual I think its possible to keep costs much lower.

I did do some experiments with both a fan heater and GCH, GCH costs were completely out of the question, really dont know how people bear them, Fan heating costs would have been within the £67 monthly help but I wanted something better, hence ending up trying the blanket.

I've just found and read my boiler manual to see if there's anything I could do better. Sorry, I made it sound a lot easier than it is. Turns out it was my husband that was given the information on how to use the boiler.  :o
