Washing machine programmes much shorter than they should be

I have a Hotpoint Whirlpool NSWM743UW. Some of the programmes run much shorter than they should do, for example the cotton programme says it will take 3h40 but it actually takes 1h45, and similar for other washes. There is a short programme setting but this isn't selected. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

I have a Whirlpool and it does something similar.  I've always assumed the shortened programme comes about when the load is 'weighed' and the machine adjusts the timings downwards accordingly.  It (perhaps) could also be to do with the ambient temperature of the cold water filling the machine - less time to heat up in summer than in winter.

  • My bosch does that. I've assumed same as JGB, that it weighs what I've put in and sorts itself out accordingly.

    Hi

I rarely venture into the kitchen but when we were trying to get the spaceship going as we often replace when they break down after 5 yrs extended warranty, the manual said something about 'wash cycle adjusts by weight'  - not sure if all machines have this. It can be overridden I think.

Year ago a washing machine ran for too long it was fixed under the extended guarantee - if mem serves me well, something to do with the timer unit was changed I think, not 100%.

    thanks

Some very good points raised by previous posters.  Ambient temperature of the incoming water will certainly have an effect, as it means it takes a shorter time to reach the programmed temperature in summer than it will in winter.  And most machines these days are very focussed on economy, so they'll use less water for a partial load than for a full load.
I guess the most pertinent question would be: does the washing get cleaned properly?  If the answer is "yes", then I wouldn't worry about it, and just be thankful you're saving a bit a rather expensive electricity

The time will adjust after the washing machine has sensed the load size.  The load size sensing is normally complete within about 15 minutes of the program starting.
