If correct, this does make me feel a bit better but also just wish it could be totally accurate..!

Sadly, not. Calorific values vary throughout the day. Suppliers use the average calorific value of the gas supplied during the billing period not a fixed caloric value of 39.4 as used in your calculation. Also, if the average calorific value is assessed to be 39.475 then a truncated value of 39.4 is used for billing.

Sure, but even if this was, say 41, it wouldn't be as high as what it showing on the BG app.
Surely the BG app is a pure estimation of gas usage though?
Well I think it must run off the smart meter to know the usage, but I just find it strange that the £ spend seems so far out from the actual cost - though I am waiting to receive a bill to confirm this.

The OP stated above that the property is smart metered.

Yes, it just seems strange that its so far out though, I guess we'll have to wait and see if it's correct.
  • Unless Hive Active is pulling data from the actual meters then it will just be best guess. Apps such as BRIGHT have direct access to the smart meter so gas volumes are always the same as those used by the supplier.

I keep an Excel spreadsheet of all my energy usage over the past two decades and have experienced very few problems with various energy suppliers - until I joined British Gas.  During each quarter, their calorific value changes and breakdowns for the relevant dates are shown in their statements,  However, the CV can sometimes change from a rounded figure (eg. 40) to a figure with fifteen decimal points (eg.39.271279373368145).  Why on earth is such a highly specific CV necessary when 2 decimal points are usually sufficient?  I have also found that, on several occasions, the resulting amount charged by British Gas (using their own figures) is incorrect and I have been overcharged (by up to £4).  No wonder they are declaring such high profits and doubling the boss' salary.
