If you're really interested you can see their timeline at https://www.directlinegroup.co.uk/en/who-we-are/our-story.html but RBS funded the creation of Direct Line Group, big purchase of Churchill renamed them to RBS Insurance and then 2008 bail out of RBS was conditional on them divesting it so it went back to Direct Line Group.Murtle said:
Interesting stuff, I didn't know that. Also explains why the agent who answered the phone declared himself to be from direct line which was rather confusing!!DullGreyGuy said:
Churchill was always supposed to be Direct Line Group's budget brand... DL itself they're all things to all people and Privilege their mass exclusive. Got a bit odd when DL launched its Private Client line without any equiv for Privilege. In practice it was all marketing differences as claims were identical and Churchill had the best policy terms.Murtle said:
That’s helpful to know, but not good to hear!! Thanks for sharing. Doesn’t sound like they have got much better then.SaverRate said:Churchill were very slow on a family members car claim a few years back so not surprised to be honest. Haven't insured with them since we had an issue with a home insurance claim a couple of years ago!
Time has gone on from then, I highly suspect brand positioning hasn't but if they've matched service/product to brand yet I dont know
The fly in the ointment was that Churchill was virtually unsellable in Scotland
Why do the Scots not like Churchill? (they have good taste, but just wondered why.)
There is always a struggle in multi-brand companies on how you maintain brand identity whilst having a coordinated approach for the products offered by multiple brands. The whole company got restructured from being brand centric to product centric in circa 2007 all because Sir Fred (as he was at the time) listened into a call from a Churchill agent who undercut the renewal price of a DL customer.
Many years ago I worked in a 24/7/365 claims call centre where during out of hours we also took calls for various random other companies (non-insurance). The headset advised the brand to say and there was a folder on each desk of what to say/do if someone called about their Bluecycle auction purchase (or whatever random company it was). Half the time the salutation would be weak (or wrong) as you desperately tried to find out what the hell the brand was about.
As to Scots and Churchill... its speculation but the Scots just dont respond so well to the english bulldog etc and other than choosing Maggie Thatcher there probably wasnt a worse politician to base it on.0 -
Guessing it must be a hard sell in South Wales (Tonypandy) and certain parts of Northern Ireland (how much time have you got?) as well...DullGreyGuy saidAs to Scots and Churchill... its speculation but the Scots just dont respond so well to the english bulldog etc and other than choosing Maggie Thatcher there probably wasnt a worse politician to base it on.0 -

If only south wales would be an issue then you cannot divide up north and south wales for advertising as they all fall under the same region for ITV and for Channel 4 Wales in in the whole South region0
