Seems its a common problem, there is some one else posting exactly the same issue today here, I think banks should do more to inform people about this.
They do.  It is usually included in the redemption letter.   In some cases, the final payment is taken into account in the redemption figure. In others it is not.  They tell you whether you should cancel the direct debit or not.

here you go.  I just looked at a redemption letter from a lender.  They are pretty similar across the board:

Should I complain to the financial ombudsman?

    • This seems like a systemic issue and the banks

Any advice would be really appreciated

    Thanks

Well until Halifax have dealt with your complaint, or 8 weeks have passed FOS will not get involved.

It will take them a few days to find the payment in the system (only 3 working days so far) so at least given them chance.

Took Halifax 9 days to refund me in this situation. Accord Mortgages took 4 days.
  • I complete on 3rd January with payment due on 1st December. If I wait for the redemption figures from Halifax then it will be too late to cancel the direct debit if the payment is not included.

So have I got to expect a massive payment to come out also since my fixed rate ends the end of the year too?

You should probably be prepared for that scenario.

  • It should be possible for them to do it quicker; I was in a similar scenario having paid the DD and my mortgage redemption amount on 1st Dec, and NatWest have refunded my direct debit payment in only 3 working days.

If your current account  is with the same bank as the mortgage and is a clearing bank then thy probably can do it quicker as there isnt the additional clearing houses to go through
