Egg card - over limit...

I totally forgot about my Egg card. I moved house and forgot to give them my new address, and i then stupidly forgot that the 0% time was up

So...i went over my limit because of all the charges, and because they couldnt get hold of me, they have put a 'trace' on my credit history?

Its all totally my fault, and i'm so cross with myself :(

What does it actually mean? Am i going to have problems with getting a mortgage? Getting more credit cards?

Apart from this, i have a good credit history.

Thanks for any advice/help you can give me. I've definitely learnt my lesson.

  • Why would giving them your new address make any difference?
All statements are online or have I missed something?

All the post I ever get from Egg (apart from renewal cards) is marketing junk.

You will have a late payment marker on your credit file but if this is the only one you should not worry too much.
Have you now cleared the excess?

Not sure what you mean by putting a 'trace' on your credit file - other than they have done a new search and have put a late payment marker on it because of your default.

They said they had written to me, but had all the post returned so couldnt get hold of me?

I have cleared the whole account now, put it all on another blimmin credit card, but thats what i should have done months ago (grrrrr!) and i wouldnt be having this problem!

I think she meant by trace, that it was to trace my new address? I found this link HERE ? Has anyone heard of it?

  • That link is to a debt collection agency.

Did you miss more than one payment?
Did they try to contact you via e-mail?

I think there is more to this than you have posted so far.
  • If they have any post returned to sender, i.e. - the person it was sent to no longer lives at that address. Or perhaps they have sent a replacement card and that has been returned or the new owner of the house phones to say that person doesn't live there anymore then they will most likely do the following:

    Try to call the person.
Send a secure message through the website asking the person to update their address and/or get in touch.

If they still don't hear from that person then they have a 'trace' team who try to locate people's new addresses. Maybe the reference to 'trace' was their own internal team and not a credit file thing? I don't know for definate*.

The card will also have a block put on it to stop any further cards being issued and to stop any further spending.

    * I'm not sure about the credit file side of things because I have no experience or knowledge of that.

With regard to the 'trace' issue, they may be referring to the Gone Away Information Network (GAIN).

This is the system whereby financial institutions pool information (via the credit reference agencies) about people who have moved and not informed them. They then glean the persons new address from companies who have been informed. They then pursue them and place a GAIN marker on the individuals credit record.

This system works for them because it is unlikely that someone would move and not inform any financial institution.

Hope this is of some help.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm going to call them again today to clarify if it was an internal 'trace' like anon-poster suggested- i hope it is, but i'm not normally that lucky!

It does sounds as though it is what Underground has suggested, that does make sense - (and its actually a very good/clever way for them to track people down!) - i take it this will stay on my credit record...

ejones999 - i havent missed any payments at all, i paid via direct debit, so it aumomatically came out every single month. So there is no more to this than i have posted, at all.

  • If you paid by direct debit why did you go over your limit?

If the amount she owed was the same as her creditlimit, interest charges if she paid by DD, would end up toppling the credit limit. But I think it would probably take a few months for that.

Maybe think of amending your credit file, with a notice of correction, explaining that you moved house and the late payments wasn't intentional. Im not saying it will help, but it might in the future. Also explaining to Egg might help.

As Venus said - it was the charges that put me over the limit :(

I was right at the top of my limit, so wasnt using the card any more. Then when the 0% ran out they started to charge me for it - voila - over the limit.

Hmmm, so i can add a note to the record? Do i need to write to them?

You can either write to them, and request your file for £2, or do it all online, but for a much higher fee im afraid.
