Residential VOIP Service

Has anyone used a VOIP service as a replacement for a landline?
I got my mother a £6 a month unlimited minutes Giff Gaff SIM but she will not hear of getting rid of her landline.
I've tried there applying for the BT Essentials Landline only contract for £10 a month but it popped up that she was not eligible. She gets Pension Credit. It said if you think you get a qualifying benefit then to contact DWP. I'll do that and see what they say.
In the meantime, has anyone used or is using a VOIP service? I was thinking that might be an alternative. Any recommendations?

Have used VOIPFone for years at home, they arent the cheapest but the sound quality is indistinguishable from a Landline and the saving for international calls (particularly pre WhatsApp/Facetime etc) is massive.
It has a few secondary features that were useful in our circumstances but probably not yours... ie I've got my mobile number registered with them so can use it as a callerID on outbound calls and so calling potential work related suppliers etc whilst I'm overseas is both cheap and they get my mobile number rather than home number if they decide to call back etc.0 -
How would your mother access the VOIP service, it sounds as if she doesn't have broadband? Or do you mean she just wants to keep the number and would use a VOIP client on the mobile0
