Insulation chalet style house

Hi all,
I've recently moved into a 1960s chalet style three bed. At the back is a nice warm modern extension but the front rooms and particularly the dormer bedroom is cold... 14 degrees with the heating off! I'm having the loft insulated and boarded this week which should help, I'll have the cavity walls done once the government agrees to pay for 75% in the spring, but but the real cold in the bedroom is coming from the section of roof under the dormer and a cupboard attached to the left hand of the room as you look out of the window. I assume the roof void under the dormer is uninsulated but there isn't access so I don't know for sure. Likewise I assume behind the plasterboard in the cupboard is just straight onto the rafters, membrane and tiles with no insulation.
Currently i'm thinking of making a hole in the wall in the cupboard to access the void and insulating the wall and floors of the void. For the sloping section of cupboard ill rip off the plaster board and insulate between the rafters. My main worry is damp, I can't see any vents in the soffits, but they certainly aren't air tight! The survey before purchase didn't note any damp in the roof but did suggest installing more ventilation.
Does anybody have any experience of doing similar?
