Visa Secure. Is it really?

  • Did you contact your bank to let them know each time you changed your phone numbers and email addresses?
    Of course. We always do.
  • For all those nay sayers, my wife and I are not entirely stupid. We religiously keep our contact information up to date with our banks. All our online details held by our banks were checked immediately after each of these transactions. My old mobile number DOES NOT appear on my bank account informations, and the two old numbers and spurious email address DO NOT appear on my wife’s bank account details either.

Contact your bank. They hold these numbers on a record for you, somewhere.

Or, if wanting to hold them to account, submit a Subject Access Request seeking details about exactly how they've processed your personal data in such a way as to have old information presented in a verification process, in view of their obligations under the Data Protection Act to keep records "accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date; every reasonable step must be taken to ensure that personal data that are inaccurate, having regard to the purposes for which they are processed, are erased or rectified without delay".
  • How does the OP failure to periodically update and confirm his personal profile with the bank/credit card provider make Visa Secure not so secure?

Next someone will complain that “Signed for” mail sent to an address where one lived 10 years that was not removed for one profile is the Bank failure to deliver important information 🙈
And why does everyone immediately leap to the conclusion that our personal information has NOT been updated as and when changes occur? It's quite depressing to read the reactions from reactionaries on here. When we have had a change, we have notified the banks.

To be fair, since you had not stated in your original post that you had done so, this was a perfectly logical assumption to make, and would be the simplest and most logical reason for the apparent error you were seeing.  It's easily done - when you change address, phone number, whatever, it's all to easy to forget to update one of the many "authorities" that need to know.
And since you provided no update/answers to people's quite reasonable questions for over a day and a half, people drew their own conclusions.

    Thanks for answering that…

I would add that my own “assumption” based on the OP later clarification could be compared to the OP same assumption that there was an Issue with Visa Secure security instead of realising that there may have been a data compliance issue with his and his wife Bank. He specifically mentions the data that Visa Secure hold about him and his wife…

without getting overly technical, Visa Secure does not hold any of the customer data. Any time Visa Secure is trigger it makes an “API” call to the bank database that will return a bank specific message (in the OP case, reference to two Tel number for him and 5 different contact details for his wife where the SFA would be sent. Just this one different should have been enough to point out that it was specific Bank related and not Visa Secure.

Also, periodically many banks, when one log online/app,  will ask me to review and confirm personal data including contact details (Barclays did that for me just last week when I logged into the app). The OP has not mentioned which banks/card issuers where involved and if it was the same or different institutions.

"Apps" I've never trusted them for banking.

I use apps for two security systems but banking is via the laptop. This is possible as I've never tried but the fear stories in the press have put me off.

You do know that apps are way more secure than online banking via a laptop, don’t you? Fear stories about apps?  I have used banks iOS apps since first launched over 10 years ago and never have had any issues, and I would bet that my transactions volume and value is at the minimum above average for this forum

the only security/fraud issue I have ever had was related to companies house old way to report data about directors, which meant that it was easier to obtain information that could be used to open bank accounts, false profiles etc.. but even that was recognised as a weakness and since changed.

But to each their own, not recognise the superior security of banks apps va weakness of online banking, and thus not exploit the extreme convenience of having financial access at your fingertip, wherever you are, is at bid sad, especially as it is based on “fear stories” and not actual verifiable data.

Simple fact is far too many never update their details when getting a new phone, email etc. Even worse the number that never advise of change of address. You would be amazed at how much mail comes back to bank. No longer at this address. 🤬

Currently setting up a team to go through all customers & ensure details are correct. Which you will be surprised to know how many people kick off when you are checking their details. Saying it's none of the bank business..
