EoN - Energy price cap - Tariff switch without consultation

My fixed rate tariff with EoN was renewed on 21 September, when it jumped dramatically to several hundred pounds a month.

A few weeks later, following steps taken by the government, EoN contacted me to let me know that my monthly amount was being reduced slightly.

On 15 November EoN contacted me to let me know that they had moved me to their variable rate tariff, as this offered the cheapest rate available.

I am concerned that, should the energy cap rise again, I will find myself in a situation where the variable rate tariff I have been moved to, without prior consultation, will work out to be more expensive than the fixed rate tariff I have been removed from.

Can anyone offer any advice on this situation?

Without the actual rates of your fix standing charges and pence per kWh no one can take that guess

I would suggest though if the fix was in September it was probably a high one and if only for one year (with winter largely discounted by the EPG) then Eon Next have probably done you a solid favour.
  • They told everyone that they were being moved into the cheapest possible tariff and that if you wanted the move to be reversed then you should contact them and ask for it.

Would you like to be on a more expensive tariff through the winter?

I think what the OP is saying is that they were on a tariff that equated to, say, £2700, which under the EPG cap got automatically reduced to £2500, but if that cap goes up to £3000, they will "lose out" if they cannot revert, in January, April 23 back to their £2700 rates.

    I think?

Using figures for illustration only  B)
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)
  • I’m sure I read that if the EPG is increased to more than the fixed tariff you were on then they’ll move you back on it for the remainder of the fixed term.

Yes, there are many in that situation - several suppliers have done this to customers (me included) when the fix couldn't be brought down to the cap within the allowable discount.

    Indeed you did https://community.eonnext.com/threads/5748-EPG-and-fixed-tariffs

    And the important bit being

If you're moved off of your fixed tariff to the Next Flex tariff, you won't pay higher than your original fixed priced contract regardless of what happens in April.

This means if we've had to move you to the Next Flex tariff so that you're paying the government EPG rates and your fixed tariff was due to run, as an example, until 17th June 2023, then you won't pay anything higher than what was agreed on the fixed tariff you had taken out, which we had to move you from, until after 17th June 2023 (please bear in mind, the dates here are an example)

Not sure if this applies to all energy suppliers as this was a specific update given to those on the Eon Next community forums.
