Ok read enough to know the next phase is years away and the returns less than a building society account.

Ultimately, Ripple is a hedge against prices staying high. You simply get a share of the operating profits but paid through a Power Purchase Agreement as a credit on your bill. If it's more profitable (i.e. wholesale electricity prices are higher) you get more.
It's probably not the best purely financial investment, but you're directly funding (and co-ownig) new renewable energy generation and helping the transition away from fossil fuels.1
