Income related ESA and carers allowance.

If someone is claiming Income related ESA and wants to claim carers allowance, will this trigger a switch to UC. I understand the carers allowance would be deducted from the ESA and a carers premium added. Thank you.

No, it will not cause a switch to UC.
But some claimants will be better off on UC so you should consider if you should switch anyway.1 -
Thanks for this clarification . I don't think so in this case as the person wanting to claim carers allowance receives sdp on the ESA and hopefully should continue to receive that as her mum who needs caring for is moving in with her and also on a disability benefit.xxxxxxxx said:No, it will not cause a switch to UC.

You should consider whether mum gets SDP in a means tested benefit s. If mum does they would lose the SDP if the person receives CA. If person gets contribution based ESA within their award then the CA could be claimed and it shouldn't be received (because C-ESA in payment) in which case mum could still get SDP. Do make sure this is checked before claiming.Rubyroobs said:

You are correct that if getting SDP then UC will (in most cases) pay less than staying on ESA.Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.0 -
There may be no choice in moving.calcotti said:

Moving what? If you mean switching from ESA to UC then claiming CA does not create any need to claim UC and managed migration for ESA claimants has been deferred to 2028 (unless they also get Tax Credits).xxxxxxxx said:

Moving mum into the ESA claimant's house.0

That wouldn't change anything with their ESA because they both claim a qualifying disability benefit.

Oh yes, my bad, calcotti meant claiming CA and I made a nonsense reply.0

That hasn’t been raised as a concern in any of the replies. The answers have all been about possible impact on their respective benefit entitlement assuming she is moving in.xxxxxxxx said:Moving mum into the ESA claimant's house.Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated.
