No charge if you pay by variable DD, pay each month the total of the bill.

If you don't want to pay by DD at all, then yes, it does now cost more.

I believe it costs 7% more paying on receipt of bill rather than fixed or variable DD.
In real terms it's debatable if already paying an excessively inflated fixed DD, whether you'd actually end up paying more.

So Octopus charge more for paying cash on receipt of bill?!? I never knew this.....since when?

Do I need to set up a direct debit to variable DD and pay each month on billing?

I am smart meter, do they set up variable DD to pay monthly? Or when I input meter readings?

I thought Octopus was the only supplier who had one tariff and pay however you like with no additional charge

Since the government started messing with tariffs (is the answer they will give you) - but in reality for several months now.

Set up direct debit and contact them asking to be put on variable DD,....
  • I have a monthly DD, but I can vary it and top up / request a refund as needed. Obviously the option of least hassle is the same payment each month, but I usually have a couple months of tweaking following a significant change. Octopus haven't given me any indication that they have a problem with this.

I also have a smart meter and get monthly bills assuming that everything is working to plan (it isn't at the moment, but I am talking to Octopus and working on sorting it).

I keep an eye on my account balance to see if I need to make any of the adjustments described above.

Following the most recent increases, Octopus suggested that I increase my monthly DD but didn't force me to. I did my own calaculations and made an adjustment, but not as extreme as they suggested. I asked about their formula for calculating the suggested payments and it didn't take into account all of the circumstances of my current usage, which is why my calculation gave a different figure to theirs.

  • I pay a £3 per month DD, but i make monthly card payments. I only have the DD set-up to get the cheaper rates.

What's the benefit of paying by card rather than letting them take the payment via the DD?

I like to use my cashback credit card to pay my bills/shopping. I find this works better for me than having a cashback bank account like the santander one.

Why £3 per month DD rather than £1 ???
