£30 compo will more than exceed any minor variation in standing charges.

No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Who was providing energy to the previous tenant ?  Did you contact that supplier when the tenant moved out ?
Hi, I'm assuming SSE were the provider for the previous tenant and the letting agent transferred my name onto the account after they left.  The problem was they were late in doing that and I'd already contacted Octopus Energy to put the account in my name  whilst the property was empty.

I suspect SSE were never not the supplier and Octopus never were the supplier.  If you had not contacted SSE with your details it is likely they rejected the switch as the supply was not in your name.  SSE were the legal incumbent supplier for the property and until you had made contact with them and registered your details no other supplier had the right to take on the supply.
