Magnetic vs Locking Drill Bit Holder?

Hi all,

I’m in the market for some new bit holders. Looking at the Milwaukee Shockwave range in particular. But anywho.

Do you folks prefer magnetic or locking drill bit holders? And if a preference, why?

Thanks!

I don't have a preference, as long as the bit is held firmly. I have the 150mm Milwaukee Shockwave that I use most of the time. It's a good product, and I rebought it when the first one went missing. The short Erbauer bit holder that came in my bit set from Screwfix is fine for the times I need a short bit holder because the Milwaukee is too long to get it and my DeWalt drill onto the screw.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
  • I suppose the advantages of the magnetic holders are a slimmer profile and faster to change bits.

Whereas the advantages of the locking holders are that is does just that - lock in place.

I think the magnetic ones have a tendency to “lose” their magnetism over time. And if you’re using decent, well-fitting drill bits which seat nicely in screw heads, there’s maybe a tendency for the bit to stay in the screw head and become detached from the holder? Which is incredibly annoying.
