Insuring a car I own but can’t drive

I’m in a wheelchair with MS, and I gave my license up about 4 years ago because of it.

I bought a wheelchair vehicle two years ago and my husband has been insured on it as the only driver. The insurance policy is in his name but I managed it and paid for it.

He’s now left me for someone not disabled, so I’m getting the car back and friends and carers will drive it for me.

Can I do that?  Recently when they’ve driven me it’s been on their own insurance 3rd party on the advice of my insurance company.

Can that continue, without me insuring the car?  Or should I:

insure 1 friend for it fully comp?
set up a v small company and transfer the car to it so it becomes a company car?
Insure myself for it? (Obvs never drive it)
keep it insured in Hub’s name but not tell him? (At renewal in 9/23 I won’t be able to because of address change etc)
Something else?

ultimately I want to keep the vehicle for days out, shopping trips etc, with various friends driving me around.

Advice hugely appreciated!

 Thanks

Maybe ask an insurance broker for advice - it's going to be complicated to insure

Your situation isn't that unusual so as suggested above, use a broker such as Adrian Flux for advice on an open driver policy.

No, the law was changed a while back that a vehicle must have continuous insurance on it unless it is SORNed and so you couldnt leave it uninsured and allow your friends to drive it under their DoC extension. Many DoC extensions, but not all, explicitly state the car must also be otherwise insured so many of your friends wouldnt be able to drive it even if you were willing to continuously SORN and unSORN it.

    1) Is a workable solution, some insurers wont like the lack of connection between the insured and the owner/keeper but given so many more have finance, leases etc more insurers are comfortable with this.

    2) Feels a hammer to crack a nut, you then have to do filings with companies house, self assessment for yourself and company insurance tends to be more than personal lines

3 & 5) Your into specialist territory here which means dealing with brokers. Its worth speaking to one anyway but certainly explore 1 as well for a price comparison via normal shopping channels.

    4) You would be running the risk that he has an accident in his own car or gets points on his license which he obv doesnt tell you about so you fail to declare them and/or the insurer may want sight of his license etc which presumably he wouldnt help you with.
  • Hi Op

Have you asked your MS nurse etc or support group etc as I'm sure you are not alone in a situation like this
    Good luck.

If you’re still looking for help on this, I can confirm Adrian Flux definitely have the option to insure it in your name, but exclude you from driving. You have the choice of named drivers excluding the policy holder, or any driver excluding policy holder.

    Hope that helps
