Vet won't do ultrasound at the same as other treatment

So we've an ongoing poorly cat that seems to have a UTI. We aren't satisfied she's getting sufficient treatment, so they've suggested sending off a urine sample to a lab to get better analysis, and then doing an ultra sound under sedation. It'll be about £500 overall.
The cat is due to go under for spaying this week, and I've asked if she needs sedating whether it's more affordable to do the ultrasound then. But they're insisting the urine sample is done first. I'm not really clear why if she needs both investigations?
We're paying out so much at the moment because the insurer won't cover it, so it would have helped if it saved a little bit of money.

I guess that they feel the urine samples will give them a clue as to what to look for / where to look. Have you asked for an explanation? Asked about postponing the spaying if it would then be possible to do both? Of course there may be good reason NOT to do that.Signature removed for peace of mind0

Postponing the spay until you have the urine test results back may be the sensible thing to do. But check whether they would then be able to do both at once. I assume it would mean her being sedated for a longer period of time which may well increse the risks to herAll posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0

A light sedation would be used for an ultrasound but for spaying it will be a full aneasthetiic.0
