Proposed job vs current job

Hello all just looking for a bit of independent advice, I have currently been offered a new position in a large aerospace company and i am trying to weigh up the pros and cons of the new role and the job i currently have. If i list them out would everyone that reads this post be able to comment on which they would prefer?
current job
£42065 per year rising to £44348 in june.
Working from home Flexi time with travel to office once a fortnight.
37 hours per week
Overtime up to 25 hours a month at a time and a third.
Deadlines on projects can be flexible
Most management retiring next year but getting replaced.
Normal office environment when in but maybe a bit too chatty about day to day life
proposed job
£50000 Per Year
working in the office means having to drive 80 Miles a day 5 days a week
37 hours per week
No overtime
Deadlines are rigid
Management stable and not looking to leave
Office environment is quite stale with most talk being of a technical nature rather than of day to day discussion.

If you are desperate for money, then calculate what is left after the extra costs of travel inc wear and tear on your car/etc.
If you are not desperate, then just the time traveling makes no sense
What does the new job offer the old one did not, - I'll help you - is it a more secure employment, better pension/perks, promotion opps - you thinking of moving there?
TBH, I'm not sure why you are asking unless you are worried about getting more training/experience etc and dont want to be left behind
Thanks0 -
400 miles per week, even in a diesel car is going to be about 8 gallons. At over £7 per gallon that's in excess of £50 per week or over £2000 per year. Add additional servicing, tyres etc and that extra £5k (after the increase at the current employer) is looking pretty depleted. Unless there is a lot to attract you to the new job I would stay put.Personally I would want to avoid an 80 mile round trip every day, having done it for a couple of years.0

first impression is that you've listed all the negative things about the proposed job but with a £5,000 rise (a typical amount to tempt you away so not an outstanding amount) so seems a stupid job move
However there's more to take into account that's not mentioned.
Aerospace/defence typically offer very good perks and are expected to do well in the 2023/24 recession.
You might get 10%+ pension contributions, 6 months paid paternity leave, 10% bonus etc. etc.
So you need to compare these things too.
Additionally how would each company effect your future career and how does it look on a CV?
if you're moving from Little-Wibblingthorpe-Widgets Ltd to BAE, then a few years of travel could be worth it for the long-term0 -
It's the difference in travel time that jumps out at me. Looking back it was actually 18 years ago that I took a job with less pay as the difference between a 60 mile total commute daily and 1 mile total was going to save me £3k a year. I expect that that cost has at least tripled since. And that was just petrol and parking not wear on the car.
Beyond that - what are the other benefits that both jobs offer. Pension, gym membership, health plan? Do you care about office chat? If the others are also only in one day in 10 then it's not surprising they have lots of chat about that's not work related.
And you think you know about the management structure but there's nothing to say it will (or won't) change without much warning.

Being able to work from home is priceless so I would not consider the new job.

What is interesting is how negative you are about the proposed job, which might, if you read your own post, help the decision process. For an increase of about £650 once the June pay increase is factored in, what's the attraction?
You've only been in your current job for 18 months - what's gone wrong?Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!0 -
Agree with Marcon: you need to take each of those 'differences' and work out how much they matter to you.Signature removed for peace of mind0

Indeed. I saw the extra travelling and didn't need to read any more; I wouldn't even consider it. But that's me.
Incidentally how do you know this:Stixalot said:

There is a reason you decided to apply for a new job. What was it and does the job offer fit what you were looking for? There’s nothing in there at all about job satisfaction, type of protect, progression and what other aspects of the job you like; that’s got to be just as important as the other factors listed. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
How do the pension offerings from each firm stack up?0
