Forgot to put reference on transfer

I have just paid off my mortgage via bank transfer . The money has gone out of my account to Lloyd's bank plc . But stupidly i did not put in a ref number .Will they be able to  trace it or will the money be lost. I'm frantic with worry

It won't be lost but you may have some chasing around to do, although it may be bounced back to you.

It won't be lost as in you'll never see it again - but it's likely they won't be able to match it up with the mortgage it's supposed to pay off. It might take a couple of days to resolve - no big panic - you'll need to get in touch with them and explain what's happened, and then they can work out where it is. Worst case is that it gets sent back to the originating bank - and by it being delayed you might have to reach a new settlement figure as the interest might have changed ever so slightly.

I made a payment to next and put no reference. I called them after seeing it had not appeared on my account. They found it in their holding account and matched it using my bank account and sort code.
