    Hi,

What does Christmas cost in Energy terms

too much, with cost of living and cost of electric just now, just don't bother with them, what you save on leccy could buy you a yellow sticker Turkey Breast,

  • I get called the grinch/scrooge at the best of times so I don't think we could go without the xmas bits and pieces. I've accounted for the extra useage in my projections and it falls into the budget so we'll see how accurate I was. The stuff won't be going up until next weekend at the earliest. . . .and there's quite a bit more than one string of lights!
  • I'd say it costs me roughly "not enough to worry about".

I usually plan a bit - impulse spend a bit - and this year will close my eyes tightly when opening the cupboard with the leccy meter in (which also usually has the cases of beers in the bottom of it)
I don't spreadsheet it or worry about us overspending mainly because we generally haven't ever overspent at Christmas and in the past have been very short of money indeed so extravagance doesn't come easily.  Pressies are small and more about the 'thought' than silly price tags. The OH is quite 'crafty' so a lot of very nice handmade stuff is gifted and I am usually quite taken aback by how good the handmade decorations and stuff are (should open an Etzy shop I reckon)
The oven will be on for the first time in many months but  - it will be rammed full with every inch utilized to get the most out of the cost of using it. My additional costs this year will be food to give to our local food bank.

I have an offspring returning from a very hot country for two weeks over Christmas. I am expecting our electric bill (no gas) to be through the roof with extra heating and extra oven food. However, presents will be small and edible

Thankfully I live alone so as per the last two years it will just be another day with no tree lights up anyway so won't be any different.  Maybe shops should start doing Energy vouchers next to the Amazon ones!

I've only had 1 Christmas alone and really enjoyed it as a novelty.  Different if life has made changes for you that you might not have wanted though.  Hope you find a way to celebrate something special at that point in the year.

Many families will cook a bit more, watch the tv a bit more, play on the console/pc a bit more, open the fridge and/or freezer a bit more often, will have the heating on a bit more while at home rather than at work (if they've got some extra time off) - all incremental increases that will have an impact on energy consumption, but how you'd measure all that I don't know :)

Thanks Brie.  It's a purely a financial decision.  Mum in care with dementia and only other family is my sister and her family and I leave them well alone on Christmas Day.  One present each for the three of them from me and obviously as POA for mum I can give gifts from her to them.  I used to put the tree and decorations up but found it pointless really.  Might get some packaged turkey, ham, chipolatas and sausage meat and have that with chips whilst watching National Lampoons Christmas Vacation but that's as far as it goes!!  I feel sorry for those with lower incomes like me but who have families with children as obviously they are under pressure to give their kids a good Christmas but at the same time it could be financially difficult.
