London Congestion Charge minor error leading to a PCN

Hi all,

Just received a PCN for for non payment of the London Congestion charge. When paying the charge we made an error with the registration number. We entered a zero instead of the letter O. Would that be reasonable grounds for a successful appeal?

I don't know in practice what attitude they take, but I would think it ought to be - as I presume the DVLA wouldn't have issued anybody else with a plate with the zero?

So why was it late payment when they had your address all along? IE, even if you have entered the number by mistake they still got your details, so I don't follow.

You might be better asking the experts on the Parking tickets, fines and parking Board.

I read a thread recently where a PCN was cancelled for someone who inputted just one wrong digit into the parking machine.

No, they just collect the numbers from those making payment, but if those don't correlate with the actual numbers passing through then they'll get the registered keeper details from DVLA to send the penalties to.

Though it wouldn't take too much effort to have a system which detects non-existent (or at least unlikely) numbers and queries them when you enter them.

I successfully appealed one a couple of years ago because they put a diversion through the zone and I strayed off it because one of the signs had fallen over.

The whole appeal is online and very straightforward so I would definitely do it.
