Hi
Looking for any help or guidance before I contact the TV licencing people.
I cancelled my TV licence in May 2022 as we realised we weren't watching much TV and happy to miss BBC and only watch things on catch up etc.
The licence was due to expire anyway around that time so thought would be good time to not bother renewing. At the time, I think I got about £60 refund where I must have been overcharged/whatever they calculated.
Last week my wife wanted to start watching live TV again with Xmas coming up etc. So she bought a new TV licence paying by direct debit.
She has been charged £31.80 for 5 months up until April 2023. After this, the DD changes to £13.25 for the following 12 months.
Apologies if I'm being stupid, but why are we being charged for a full TV licence for a year, but it only lasts until April 2023 before it seemingly renews.
If someone could do explain if I'm not understanding this before I contact TV licensing people that would be much appreciated, thanks.

Should have mad eit clear at time of ordering but from April you'll be paying for the following license 6 months in advance1

The monthly payment scheme works 6 months in credit, then 6 months in arrears. The first Licence is paid for over 6 months before going on to that pattern. This is the way the scheme is designed, and it is intended so that people paying monthly receive no benefit compared to those paying annually (which is 12 months in advance).
The account remains 6 months in credit until you eventually cancel.

Thanks for your responses, I think I understand what you are explaining. Looks like everything is in order then!1
