Getting a Reduction in Energy Bills

Hi guys,

so I came across some advice somewhere that gave instructions for getting a reduction in my bills.

It gave me a template, said where/how to send it and told me to threaten to send a complaint to the ombudsman. It said once my supplier had received it, they’ll offer me a small reduction. This is precisely what they’ve done, but I’m not sure what to do from now as I can’t find the thing I saw the advice on (it was a social media post that I can’t locate)

so does anyone know what to do next? I’m using no heating as I’m lucky because I live in apartments and it doesn’t get too cold, but my bills are still double what they were this time last year. It’s despicable that these parasites are profiteering from our misery so I’m intent to do all I can to get my bills reduced by as much as I can.

Any advice will be much appreciated

  • This is not a thing. I'm afraid your "advice" is wrong.

    Hope this helps.

I'm not at all sure that the "parasites are profiteering" Whilst it is undoubtedly true that you are paying considerably more so are they. Have you not seen any stories about restrictions on gas supply, cutting off of oil, war in Ukraine etc. I suppose TV is not available in a cave!

I suspect they mean their DD has been reduced.

Nothing. They have done what you wanted, haven't they?

You cannot complain to The Energy Ombudsman: you have to follow the supplier’s complaints procedure in full. As both the Energy Cap and the Energy Protection Guarantee are both set by the Government, your time would be better spent writing to your MP. My guess is that any sensible supplier will put your letter into the bin which is were it belongs.

    Me too.
There are still so many people who think their monthly DD IS their fuel bill. Despite regular mentions in media that it isn’t

What sort of reduction were you given? Was it a one off credit or a reduction in your direct debit? Did you actually raise a complaint with your energy supplier or just send the letter threatening to do this & if so, what was the complaint about? I’m struggling to understand what you’ve actually done here

Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

    hi @evasivedavid

i'm not sure what your question is. reading your op is it that your bills have doubled even tho you think you arent using more energy than in other years?

if thats it then maybe we can help work out what your bills should be? lots of people have had a good result writing to there supplier and proving using the actual numbers what there dd should be set at and that there dd is over estemated.

if you would like us to help you wit that then you need to tell us what tarrif you are on (what supplier and what do you pay per unit)

and give us your meter readings. ideally a recent reading and a reading from about 12 months ago but any two readings work as long as we know when they were taken.

then we can give you the info you need to prove to your supplier what level your dd should be at (and if it is a lot higher than you think it should be then maybe help figure out if you have a faulty meter or spot ways you can cut down your use).

    sound good?

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

The 'parasites' you refer to are capped at a 2% margin on retail pricing, so hardly profiteering.
And 29 of them have gone bust this year, so your allegations are patently ridiculous.
The only profits being made on energy are by the producers and some of the generators: these are not the same as the retailers you buy from.
