Is it legal to drive a car when only the brake light above the rear window is working?
Why would you want to? It is ok to drive it to a garage for repair, but it's still illegal.
    No, it isn't!
So when my warning lights comes on, on my dashboard.
    Should I call for recovery?
    Depends on the warning light.
    Brake light or side light!

Before doing anything, I'd check that there really is a fault - if a brake light can malfunction, so can a warning light!

And I  wouldn't call for recovery to replace a bulb.

No, I'd replace the bulb (without professional assistance).

In my works VW Crafter, any faults and we take the vehicle to our base, then someone will drive it to our workshop, 3/4 miles away.
There doesn't seem to be any effort to fix faults, which are illegal, sooner.

You can see vehicles driving around with lights out all the time. The police don't seem to care.
I would think having all your lights working and on, would go a long way to prevent accidents.

100% agree. Police dont care re blown bulbs very noticeable as nights close in and dont car about number plates mis-spaced.
However, if you get stopped, sadly not all officers like any profession have adequate social skills and at times abrupt etc and assume wrongly. If you make the mistake of pulling them up even in a polite manner, they go around you car and as i don't carry my licence and insurance on me or my phone and that is wrong, they give me a producer - I'm always 100% puka and never even had a parking ticket and there are many good officers there but I want them to do the right thing and pull up those driving without lights, failed lights and often stopping those people results in other things being found out.

Re lights - I'm glad i left work at the age of just shy of 55. In the morning when I travel from Tunbridge W, to hQ about twice a week for early meetings/natter, the number of times i saw push bikes no lights and cars with headlamps fully blown on the passengers side.

    Take care
