New flat - can I choose supplier

Just completed on my flat yesterday and took photos of meters etc. Currently supplied by Eon, but I was wondering do I need to contact them or can I just choose any supplier? I realise there is no difference price- wise at the moment, so only advantage would be customer service etc. Also want to get smart meters fitted.

You MUST open an account with Eon, so contact them, give them your details and the meter readings.
You could then switch suppliers IF you can find one that will take you on.
As for smart meters, hopefully Eon or anyone you move to would agree to install them if your home is suitable.1 -
Thanks, I thought that might be the case.The_Fat_Controller said:You MUST open an account with Eon, so contact them, give them your details and the meter readings.

Why get smart meters? you can easily check the daily usage by reading the meters every day/week/month. It's just a matter of doing some simple calculations to get the daily usage in kWh'sSomeone please tell me what money is1

Why not get smart meters?wild666 said:Why get smart meters? you can easily check the daily usage by reading the meters every day/week/month. It's just a matter of doing some simple calculations to get the daily usage in kWh's4 -
Which is fine if the OP has easy access to their meters which is not always the case in blocks of flats.wild666 said:Why get smart meters? you can easily check the daily usage by reading the meters every day/week/month. Many reasons - ease of use without having to delve into cupboards of go outside to get routine readings. Access to TOU tariffs which might save the OP money as time goes on. More detailed information that gives a better insight into how energy is used by your home. And (if using the IHD) a better chance of spotting if something has been left switched on accidentally.wild666 said:Why get smart meters? you can easily check the daily usage by reading the meters every day/week/month. Personal preference, I get that it's not for everyone. Makes it easier to see how much it is costing me and to see improvements from small changes eg. turning thermostat down, LED bulbs etc. - especially important at the moment.wild666 said:Why get smart meters? you can easily check the daily usage by reading the meters every day/week/month. Thanks, and yes you've pretty much listed all the key reasons I want to get smart meters fitted.EssexHebridean said:

Agreed, although mine is a coach house flat and meters are fairly accessible outside. Even so, smart meters still make it more convenient and easier all round.The_Fat_Controller said:

Having read about the woes re smart meters recently and having sought advice from good posters on this forum, we are certainly not getting one unless it becomes mandatory and it will in time for reasons we all know.wild666 said:Why get smart meters? you can easily check the daily usage by reading the meters every day/week/month.
