I have had high quality timber effect uPVC agreed in a conservation area - maybe worth looking at some options and speaking with the local Conservation Officer?

I can't remember who my bro used, but it was me wot found them. I just went through all the sash window co's in London, gave them the measurements, and got the quotes. It wasn't essential for him to go timber, but it's what he wanted - he then perturbed the manufacturer by insisting on single rather than their slim double, as he likes the sound of the rain...
      So, get surfin'.
I also got a quote from a co in the south west who specialise in refurbishing windows as part of a green initiative, but sadly it cost more.

If they look the business, all day long. Who wants to paint windows every few years.
      Great idea.
    • It's probably expensive because it's accoya. Always was expensive, butnIm8magine recent ev2nts have pushed the price up even more.

OP, have you tried Ventrolla, if they operate in your area? They refurbished our windows (new hinges, effective draft strips etc) on toplights, and replaced the casements  with new engineered wood and thin, krypton, double glazing. They refurbish/replace sash windows as well.

      Very please with the result.
    • Our accoya (casement, which I appreciate are cheaper but these were large) windows came in at around £1250 each three years ago. I know the price of timber has risen a lot in the intervening years, but £42k seems crazily high!

I said it should be about 50% in my first post here then I thought, gosh I don't even know the size of the windows. However, even if these were 6 foot tall windows 42k is a staggering price.
    • No info to know about the price you have been quoted but . Shop around ,find someone with knowledge and see their work . Massive difference in the making good . By a jobber / joiner/ master craftsman . accoya is the timber of choice . Ive recently been quoted over 1k for just 2 sashes to refit into an existing box section . pics could help with knowing esp the doors

      That's £6000 a piece!
Assuming a pvc door my local quote about £1000, sash guess at £2000, add special wood ££3000 any room for inflation or specialty  it's still way out.

Have they given you a breakdown of the price? Ask for one.
Ask the conservation officer for advice. See in person if possible rather than a phone call. You might get more personal information. They tend to be nice guys because they are interested in historical houses. I've worked with a few.
And yes you need more quotes.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
