Possibly because they are processing upwards of 5 million payments a month, and so inevitably some of those will be wrongly credited, or untraceable? Even a 0.1% failure rate would mean 5,000 such cases each month.
They must have a system though that allows them to do a search on name, account number, amount etc.. that's just basic ITNo free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Ignore CS - go to
complaintresolution@edfenergy.com
and you will also get £25Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill1 -
Agree with the advice, make a complaint, make it clear on the complaint any financial costs due to credit history you will be prepared to reclaim of them to discourage them from going down that route, but also make it clear you will continue to maintain your account whilst the investigation is going on e.g. paying next months bill.
Obviously you need to keep proof of transaction from your side.
I would consider agreeing to remaking the payment on the condition they investigate where the first payment went to and if they wont stand down on the credit file, in which case it would be done under duress.0 -
If you used a web browser you may be able to pick up the transaction complete page in your history.
This would have the reference number.1
