    They must have a system though that allows them to do a search on name, account number, amount etc.. that's just basic IT 

    Indeed, but some of those 5 million payments do get misrouted, and then the job of trying to match them up is complex.

    Agree with the advice, make a complaint, make it clear on the complaint any financial costs due to credit history you will be prepared to reclaim of them to discourage them from going down that route, but also make it clear you will continue to maintain your account whilst the investigation is going on e.g. paying next months bill.

    Obviously you need to keep proof of transaction from your side.

    I would consider agreeing to remaking the payment on the condition they investigate where the first payment went to and if they wont stand down on the credit file, in which case it would be done under duress.

    If you used a web browser you may be able to pick up the transaction complete page in your history.

    This would have the reference number.
