OK I understand that. I did not get an option to back it up so could I just pop the sd card into the pc, transfer the files across to my hard drive via Windows explorer then plug in a new SD card from currys or whatever then transfer the files over to the new one manually?

Then run the new SD card for 70 miles, pop it into the pc and then do the update. Is that what you mean ?

Then I could keep the OEM mazda sd card as a back up / spare for the future in case I ever need it ?

    Thanks
Yes to all that, it's exactly what I did, SD card into a reader on the PC, copy everything off (I don't remember if there were any hidden files but enable that just in case), swap the card and put the new one in and copy them over. It won't be seen by Mazda toolbox however but once inserted in the car it will read the maps like normal. Once it's done the mileage, just whack it back in the PC, launch the toolbox and away you go. I kept the OEM card as well but the 8gb simply isn't enough.

I got a branded Sandisk 16gb on Amazon for £7.65, wouldn't go to Currys. I bought a SDHC Class 4 card, looks like it's £8.99 now

    Thanks  :)

I put the card back into the pc and to answer my original question the "update" was just an option to reinstall Dec 2019.

So I went ahead and paid a one off update from June 2022. I then manually transfered all the data across to my PC just incase I run Into any problems I can reinstall it easily.
There was no option to make a back up, not sure why but I used windows explorer anyway

Could have waited till December for the next one but decided to update as soon as I could because of some journeys coming up

If the android auto/car play retro fit wasn't ridiculously expensive I would have considered that. However I also don't like the idea of my phone being mirrored to the infotainment due to it being an added distraction

I don't use the inbuilt satnav now. Android auto and using Waze or google is a great alternative but does require the vehicle to have AA first.

The level of distraction is directly proportional to how you operate the system and your personal discipline.
