Central heating pump settings/noise

  • Are you DIYing?
Yes- as you suggested the pump swap looks pretty straightforward and I have the isolators either side. It was £190 so thought it was worth a punt and if it improves our CH efficiency slightly (as well as being slightly more energy efficient in terms of electricity usage), and I can set it a little slower/quieter it will be worth it. The highest speed setting on the Grundfos just seems to be a massive step up from 2 so I suspect somewhere in the middle of these two speeds will do us fine. The model with the smart feature wasn't that much more than the one without.

Will fit it next week and yes will report back. Thanks for your help.

The whole point, I'd suggest, is the smart feature.
As rooms heat up and rads shut off, the demand will change. ANY fixed speed will be a compromise. Let the 'auto' do the walkin'.

Indeed will definitely use the smart feature and see how it goes.
  • As promised, update on this.

Fitted the Lowara ecocirc. A few hiccups and ended up having to replace both gate valves and drain the system a bit to allow me to do this.Did this from gate valve itself (bottom compression connection) and a plumb tub. Probably not ideal but allowed me to drain off just the right amount. Forgot it included the cylinder coil draining down as well though, which is in the loft above, so a fair bit came out.

That said, seems to be running ok now, again after a slightly odd boiler fault code which suggested communication/possible PCB fault and not starting up initially. Panic averted, I think.

Anyway....it is not an overstatement to say this has totally transformed our central heating system! We found out that our original pump was well over 20 years old- it runs almost silently now with no vibrations from pipes, even on the highest speed setting so it must have been some form of vibration from the pump resonating down the pipework?

We were honestly a bit resigned to having a noisy central heating system so very glad I swapped the pump over.
